BLS Releases 2016 State, National Injury/Illness Rates

South Carolina's on-the-job injury/illness rate for private industry was essentially unchanged at 2.5 injuries/illnesses per 100 full-time equivalent workers in 2016. The U.S. rate for private industry in 2016 was 2.9. T
he data comes from the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics' (BLS) annual Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses. The state's 2016 estimate for the injury/illness rate for the public sector was 4.4, compared to 4.7 in 2015.
Among the private sub-sector industries with the highest non-fatal occupational injury and illness incidence rates for total cases in the state were: • Beverage and tobacco product manufacturing, 6.3 • Wood product manufacturing, 5.9 • Nursing and residential care facilities, 5.7 • Hospitals, 4.6 • Food manufacturing, 3.9
