New Tidelands Health Location to Offer 20,000 Patient Visits Per Year

Connecting with a primary care physician in Horry County is about to get easier.

On Tuesday, Tidelands Health leaders hosted a grand-opening ceremony for Tidelands Health Medical Park at Holmestown Road.

The new location is home to a Tidelands Health Family Medicine practice and the Tidelands Health MUSC Family Medicine Residency Program, which was developed to attract new family physicians to the region.
Resident physicians will work side by side with established physicians at the new practice, giving patients the benefit of two physicians’ expertise at each visit. Resident physicians have graduated from medical school and are completing three years of specialized training in family medicine under the guidance of established physicians.

“Today marks a major milestone in our efforts to improve access to high-quality medical care across the Tidelands region,” said Bruce Bailey, president and CEO of Tidelands Health. “This new location will benefit not just patients who receive care here but also the entire community by expanding the capacity of our region’s health care network.”

The Tidelands Health MUSC Family Medicine Residency Program began this year with eight resident physicians, a number that will grow to 24 by 2019. At that point, the residents and physicians at the Tidelands Health Family Medicine practice will offer at least 20,000 patient visits per year.

The community benefits won’t stop there, however. Many resident physicians who participate in the program are expected to stay in the region following graduation, creating a flow of new physicians to support the community’s growing population.

The new residency program was developed with support from the Medical University of South Carolina, which provides curriculum and some faculty. Tidelands Health physicians also serve as faculty members.
“The Tidelands Health MUSC Family Medicine Residency Program leverages the resources of both a community health system and an academic medical center,” said Dr. Patrick Cawley, CEO of MUSC Health and vice president for health affairs at MUSC. “Together, we are providing unparalleled training opportunities for residents and excellent care for our patients.”

To house the residency program and new family practice location, Tidelands Health invested $11 million in a new building that features state-of-the-art technology and a modern design. It includes 24 exam rooms, as well as teaching and lounge space for residents.
