BLS Releases 2017 State, National Injury/Illness Rates for SC

South Carolina's on-the-job injury/illness rate for private industry was essentially unchanged at 2.5 injuries/illnesses per 100 full-time equivalent workers in 2017. The U.S. rate for private industry in 2017 was 2.8.

The data comes from the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics' (BLS) annual Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses.

The state's 2017 estimate for the injury/illness rate for the public sector was 4.2, compared to 4.4 in 2016.

Among the private sub-sector industries with the highest non-fatal occupational injury and illness incidence rates for total cases in the state were:

• Nonmetallic mineral product manufacturing, 5.8

• Nursing and residential care facilities, 5.6

• Hospitals, 5.5

• Furniture and related product manufacturing, 4.2
